REGARDING TRASH COLLECTION OPTIONS

Dear Jerusalem Township Residents,

Although most communities charge their residents for the cost of trash collection, for many years Jerusalem Township has paid all of the costs of trash collection for its residents.

When the Maumee Bay Lodge opened and began paying the 3% lodging tax to Jerusalem Township, the Trustees at that time decided to use the hotel tax revenues to provide free trash collection for our residents.

Over the years, the cost of trash collection has increased substantially and now exceeds the hotel bed tax revenues. In addition, the Lucas County 911 Dispatching consolidation will cost Jerusalem Township at least $40,000 per year in new fees from the General Fund. This funding shortfall is threatening to exhaust the Jerusalem Township General Fund in the near future.

In order to remedy this situation, the Trustees are considering several changes:

  1. Terminate the AllStar contract (acquired by Republic) and execute a new contract with a local provider who has a reputation for superior customer service (Klumm Brothers).
  2. Work with the Lucas County Auditor to add the cost of the trash pick-up fees to our Residents’ Tax Duplicate. This process will involve three Lucas County Commissioners’ public hearings where the proposal will be read. The additional tax will begin to show up on 2022 property tax bills for township residents.

The cost to township residents will be approximately $12.50 per month ($150.00 per year).

The change in trash service provider from Republic to Klumm Brothers offers several advantages for our Township Residents:

  1. Klumm Brothers will provide one 96 gallon toter type trash can to each residence at no charge
  2. Klumm Brothers will pick up one bulk item per residence each month at no charge
  3. Klumm Brothers will accommodate elderly or disabled residents by retrieving the trash toter from its normal position next to the house, emptying it, and returning it to its normal position.

Your Jerusalem Township Trustees do not want to ask Township Residents to pay higher taxes but the Township no longer has adequate revenue to provide free trash collection for our residents. Therefore, our alternatives are limited.

We want to hear from our Township Residents on this issue. We invite you to share your comments with us using one of the following ways:

  1. Attend one of the Special Meetings on:
    Wednesday, June 30, 2021 – 7:00pm @ Township Hall, 9501 Jerusalem Road
    Saturday, July 24, 2021 – 11:00am @ Township Hall, 9501 Jerusalem Road
(Both meetings will cover the same information so it is only necessary to attend one)
  2. E-mail your comments to: info@twp.jerusalem.oh.us
